Here's What's Cooking in the Kitchen

The kitchen is the area where everyone gathers after school, for dinner, when neighbors drop by, or when you have a dinner party. There's something about the kitchen that draws everyone in. The best conversations happen while preparing a meal for your most favorite people. The best jokes, the loudest laughs, and the best wine are all served up in the kitchen. So, we have to make this kitchen as magical as all the moments that will take place in it.

The original kitchen was already pretty unbelievable. This kitchen was ahead of its time in 1968. The original layout was great with tons of space, loads of storage, and a good work triangle like every HGTV show recommends. But we wanted to open the space up a bit. We wanted more flow and more connection between the kitchen and the living room.

Let me show you the original layout:

So, here's what we're cookin' up in the new Greyhound Estate kitchen:
  • Remove the wall and built-ins where the refrigerator currently stands.
  • Remove the small desk space next to the pantry and relocate the refrigerator to that space.
  • Take in some dead space of the utility room to make a gorgeous, I mean spacious and useful, pantry. (Can a pantry be gorgeous, too? I love a really great pantry.)
  • Remove the wall and built-ins between the breakfast area and the living room for a more open feel to both spaces.
  • Close off the pass-thru window from the butler's pantry to the living room. (Just FYI, you will be envy of all your friends when they see the cabinets in this butler's pantry. Storage for days!)
  • Move the door to the utility room to be near the back door and not in the kitchen so that you aren't carrying dirty laundry through your clean kitchen.
  • Add a mud bench beside the back door leading to the garage to collect purses, computer bags, and backpacks.
  • Enlarge the island and add knee space for seating around it.

And this, is the floorplan for the remodeled space:

Let me just take a moment to talk about the storage in this kitchen. There are cabinets galore in this kitchen and utility room. Plenty of room to put all of your dishes, cookware, fun kitchen gadgets, and more. It's a chef's dream kitchen!

Along with being a chef's dream, it will be an entertainer's dream kitchen. There is plenty of room for elegant dinner parties with friends, holiday meals with the entire family, and fun times with neighbors who drop by. The formal dining room is just through the door by the butler's pantry for more formal affairs. The butler's pantry's french doors can be opened to the foyer for great flow to allow guests to help themselves to drinks at the wet bar. Or close the french doors and use the space as a true butler's pantry to prep and stage food for serving without traffic flowing through. The doors and the space allow for so many options for different parties, functions, or guests.

I must also mention that some forward-thinking individual installed a dumbwaiter in Greyhound Estate, and, yes, we are absolutely keeping it! It's brilliant! After the changes are made to the second floor (that's a later post, of course), the dumbwaiter will be able to deliver goods to the second floor kitchenette. This is great for guests staying on the second floor or for kids when they need a snack from the kitchen.

One of the biggest changes to this space is opening the wall between the breakfast area and the living room to give both spaces a more open feel. Opening this space up has so many advantages. The light from the french doors in the living area will now pour into the breakfast area as well. Opening the space allows for parents to be in the kitchen and still keep an eye on littles in the living room. (And don't worry. When you want separation from the kids, there's also a formal parlor, about which you'll hear more later.) While entertaining guests, you can still enjoy their company if you're cooking in the kitchen and the guests are in the living room. It gives flexibility to these two spaces that didn't exist before.

The framing has already taken place for these changes and it is really taking shape beautifully. We can't wait to share more about the kitchen with you soon!
